Arriraw testing and evaluation completed

Pure Digital Services has now completed full testing and evaluation for the Alexa and the Arriraw file format.

Pure has developed workflows and full testing now for Features in India, UK and Australia plus TV shows in Canada.

Alexa's version of Arriraw right now works well, just keep in mind your workflow and dealing with the Arriraw format and it will deliver 3K full resolution DPXs.

Digital negative report

When shooting on film, the rushes are sent to the lab, and from there you will receive a negative report on the DMax and DMin levels? film scratches? All that’s measured through optics, and it’s done quickly and efficiently. With digital cinema you can’t produce a negative report without giving it a 100-percent lookthrough. You’re looking at the sensor, you’re looking for shutter errors, dead pixels, and noise patterns, and that has to happen in real time. A digital negative report is essential or the completion of a successful shoot.

The creative advantages for digital are too big to completely dismiss, or discourage. Its possible that a digital production, with all the safety checks required today, that it is just as expensive as film, but the options that digital offers can really bring together ground breaking cinematography and as such open a new wave of possibilities.

Abobe CinemaDNG Initiative

The CinemaDNG file format is designed to store high-resolution video streams in camera raw format and typically adds less than 1 KB overhead per image. CinemaDNG files typically require half the storage space of corresponding DPX files. Each video frame is independently encoded using the DNG (Digital Negative) image format. The video stream is stored either as a picture track in an MXF (Material Exchange Format) file or as a sequence of individual frame files.

CinemaDNG uses fully-documented, vendor-neutral, standard formats for video and imaging – DNG, TIFF/EP, and MXF. The format is unencrypted and free from intellectual property encumbrances or license requirements. Several SDKs are available for each of the components of the format.

The CinemaDNG format allows vendors to add functionality on set or in post, for example, by extending the decoder SDKs with additional image processing or metadata processing.

Pure Digital Services can now capture and render the .ari files from the Alexa and deliver full frame 3K DPXs at 2880 x 1620. This allows for more headroom for possible pan & scan within the 3K frame and when re-sized to 2K gives you sharper images.
