ALEXA 3D - ANOTHER NEW ALEXA - THIS TIME IT’S M
Republished with permission from www.definitionmagazine.com
ANOTHER NEW ALEXA - THIS TIME IT’S M
ARRI is developing a further model in the ALEXA family of cameras: the ALEXA M - a new, remote solution consisting of a separate camera head and body.
At the Arri press conference it was also announced that the Cameron Pace Group, James Cameron and Vince Pace will be entering an agreement to co-develop the camera system and as a result that Group will have exclusive commercial access to the first systems to be made available in September 2011, Serial production and sales release of the ALEXA M to all customers will commence during the first quarter of 2012.”
ALEXA M is tailored for action photography, tight corner shots and 3D productions. Based on proven ARRI technologies, the M model features the same great image quality that has made ALEXA so popular.
The M head is optimized for small size and low weight, offering the flexibility when used on lightweight 3D setups. Multiple mounting points on top and bottom allow an easy setup onto existing 3D rigs. Head and body are connected with a fibre optic cable that can also be used for powering the head, depending on distance. The back end provides various recording options, just like the standard ALEXA does: images, sound and metadata can be recorded onto SxS cards or on external recording devices, offering different kinds of workflows.
ALEXA M has a PL mount, works perfectly with all existing 35mm lenses and is compatible with a wide range of ARRI accessories.
Pure RAW Testing with ArriRAW Live
Pure RAW, part of Pure Digital Services, have spent all day yesterday prepping and testing another ArriRAW LIVE system from Mistika in the UK for our upcoming ArriRAW projects, of which one is in 3D and another data show for Disney. We consulted with Mistika and Steve Shaw at Light Illusion to create a full onset workflow for ArriRAW and are delighted with the results.
The ArriRAW live unit allows for real time 3K playback on location and near real time full technical debayer, all created and delivered on location, allowing for speedier workflows, full 3K DPX delivery to Post, 3K playback and verification on set including full dailies and offline content, including iPad screeners, all from the fully debayered Master DPX and all created near set.
I have uploaded some images from our UK test yesterday at www.puredigitalservices.com within the blog page, do take a look. More details coming during today at NAB plus a full technical evaluation on our blog pages this week.
Thanks must go to Mistika SGO and Geoff Mills, Light Illusion Steve Shaw and Sandy and to S.two for all the hard work and research to bring this system to market, thankyou all.

Alexa Studio Camera
Republished with permission from www.definitionmagazine.com
Today Arri complete the programme of three ALEXA cameras that they announced back in 2009. The original ALEXA followed by the ALEXA Plus and now ALEXA Studio. ALEXA Plus was announced at
last year’s IBC in Amsterdam. The Plus is a ‘back to Arri dealership’ mod to the ALEXA and Arri have reported that 70% of Alexa owners have chosen to upgrade.
Now there is a new ALEXA, the Studio. (Differentiated in a similar way that the ArriCAM and ArriCAM Studio are). Arri are quick to underline that ALEXA is their platform, one that will be improved upon as and when the technology allows. The new family member is the one that many have been waiting for, the one with the optical viewfinder. The Studio’s optical viewfinder system, Arri say, will pass the performance of the ArriCAM and in fact any that Arri has made up to now. The complexity of producing a rotating mirror shutter system in a digital environment is why there aren’t many around, the only other is on the Arri’s D21 system.
With ALEXA Arri are trying to mirror their film camera logistics. You have ArriCAM Studio, ArriCAM Light, 435, and 235. All these cameras work on a typical feature film but do different things. They are used differently but produce inter-cuttable images. With the three ALEXAs Arri want a similar situation. Products differentiated on functionality not so much on basic performance. The picture quality remains the same. Of course on the Studio camera you can do anamorphic but with 16:9 you may have a Studio for a well controlled environment, a Plus on the shoulder and grab shots with the ALEXA.
The Studio then will have the new optical viewfinder and a 4:3 sensor with the total pixel count is 3392 x 2200 (27.98 mm x 18.15 mm). The active pixel count is 2880 x 2160 (23.76 mm x 17.82 mm).
The sensor is the same as the previous ALEXA cameras but in that camera the signal processing only deals with the 3-perf part, 16:9 area, the top and bottom of that area are not used and not powered. The Studio’s signal processing goes beyond that to include the rest of the sensor and so the camera will be more power thirsty.
ALEXA Studio will have the same recording capabilities with the SxS the same as with the other two models, also for RAW and uncompressed.
Arri hope that there will be a working prototype of ALEXA Studio in the autumn of this year, perhaps IBC. The price of the Studio will be more than the Plus in the region of EURO90,000 which is less than the proposed price back in 2009 which was around EURO130,000.
The processing of the Studio with the ALEXA’s original dual path approach and full sensor path mixed with the 21st Century answer to optical viewfinders is at the heart of this new camera design.
Arri has been true to their word as far as schedules are concerned and now we just have to wait and see how good Studio is.

ICC profile cube from 3D LUT: Alexa EI350
Steve Shaw at www.lightillusion.com has shown us a way of baking into stand alone QuickTime movies (this includes Alexa captured 4444 ProRes) a 3D LUT that is converted into an ICC Profile.

Arriraw and ProRes LUT links
Alexa ICC Profile 3D LUT integration with ProRes
Taken from Steve Shaw and the Light Illusion web site March 2011 :
Alexicc FCP/Quicktome is an ICC based solution that enables FCP and Quicktime Pro7 running on a Mac, to work with Alexa ProRes444 Log-C rushes with LUT burnt in. Ideal for dailies and off-line workflows.
The main requirement for LUT operation with FCP and Quicktime Pro7 is the ability to convert true 3D LUTs into ICC profiles that are compatible with FCP and Quicktime.
To perform this conversion requires the use of SpaceMan ICC, or Light Illusion's LUT Conversion service.
To Use
To use Alexicc FCP you will need:
An Intel Mac with Quicktime Pro 7
To apply the ICC profile (LUT) within FCP to the sequence select Effects>Video Filters>Quicktime>Colorsync which will be implemented very soon.
CDL will also be implemeted soon.
To 'burn' the ICC profile into clips use the export window (or from within Quicktime Pro7) and use Export>Video>filter>Adjustments>Colorsync.
The Alexicc ICC profile should be set as 'Source', and the 'Target' set at Rec709, or sRGB, as required.
For more information on Alexicc contact www.lightIllusion.com or: steve@lightillusion.com.
